PeruCrafts Logo

Peru produces a great variety of unusual handicrafts. Reasons for this include a large Indian population, rugged geography, conservatism, and a relatively undeveloped infrastructure. High mountains and poor roads produced isolated native communities in the formative years of Peruvian craftsmanship. Lack of communication between population centers lead to diversity as native artisans applied their creativity to produce everyday items. A long tradition of craftsmanship in isolated districts has developed distinct artistic patterns recognizable in pottery and textiles. Although much of the population now lives in cities on the coast, most people were born in rural settings and were introduced to craft work at a young age.

PeruCrafts was started for the purpose of promoting craftsmanship in rural communities, by paying artisans who make their own wares. The intention is to provide a viable income for rural people, encourage them to keep producing their products, and introduce the world to the value of their labor. If their standard of living improves, they may be encouraged to remain in their villages and contribute to the rural growth of Peru.

PeruCrafts a family business. Members of the Hermoza family live in Peru and the United States. They visit communities where the products are made and send them to the US members of the family.

Peru, like the rest of the world, is changing. In time, the traditional crafts that we feature will become more difficult to find and prices will rise. Enjoy the things you buy, knowing that they will not lose value over time.
